Kings Colours in the 1777 Flag.gif

The Flag of 1777 with the Kings Colours Flag superimposed on it to show the postulated pattern of the star evolution used by Francis Hopkinson in designing the documented first official flag.
The flag in use on July 4, 1776 was the Grand Union Flag which can also be seen in this image simply be removing the stars. Remove the stripes and the stars and you have the Kings Colours flag.
Paint all the stripes red and remove the stars, and you get the British Red Ensign flag.

1777-95 Official 1st Flag.gif

Original 1777 Flag of the American Revolution, FIRST OFFICIAL FLAG of the USA.
The 5 pointed star pattern is a variation of the DOCUMENTED 6 pointed star pattern designed by Francis Hopkinson for the Navy. Francis was a patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately he couldn't even get a flask of wine to pay for his design. Most first flags flew on naval ships, not land.

This alternate 5 pointed star 4-5-4 flag design pattern was possibly in use from just after 1776 to 1795. 8 pointed stars were more likely.

Evolution of our flag from St. Andrew's Cross, St. George's Cross, the British Kings Colours, the British Red Ensign, the Continental Colours (Grand Union), the First 1777 Official Flag of the USA, the Star Spangled Banner (SSB) with 15 stars, and finally the 50 star flag of today that still contains the 1777 star pattern and the traces of the Kings Colours crossing pattern.
(The number of stripes was held constant at 13 except in the SSB flag.)
