A step relationship is when you are related to someone and their descendants by marriage or illegitimacy. For example, if your grandfather was married a second time after your grandmother died or was divorced, any children or cousins from this second marriage would be step uncles, step aunts, step 1st cousins(zero removed) etc.
Levels removed is calculated as the number of generations above or below your level in the chart. Your level consists of you, uncles, aunts, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins-all zero removed, even if a step relation.
If someone is your 1st cousin, then their children are your 1st cousins-- x removed. If two people are 1st cousins relative to you, the children of each of your 1st cousins will be second cousins to each other. Children of 2nd cousins, are 3rd cousins to each other.
